Curriculum Assessment Report on Learning Objectives (CARLOs)
Per the Arts & Sciences Core Curriculum Vision document, “Functionally, the Arts and Sciences core curriculum, taught within a community of Christian scholars, enables men and women to acquire the knowledge, skills, and virtues needed to uncover and recognize truth, to deepen their faith, to live virtuously, to strengthen their communities, and to affect the world in transformative ways. To that end, the core curriculum will:
- provide a shared foundation of knowledge drawn from the rich and diverse liberal arts tradition;
- develop various skills necessary for the completion of an academic degree, but also essential for personal and professional life beyond Baylor;
- inspire moral, intellectual, and spiritual virtues.”
To assess “Student learning within each common course and distribution list (shared knowledge, skills, virtues)”, the Curriculum Assessment Report on Learning Outcomes (CARLO) asks “departments to provide feedback on how they see themselves addressing and assessing the objectives outlined in their Core classes, including which assignments(s) they are using, and the results of their own assessment.” This assessment is through a mixture of both Direct and Indirect Assessment Methods:
- Direct Assessment methods examine student work such as papers, tests, and presentations. These measures should provide evidence of students’ knowledge or abilities.
- Indirect assessment methods, such as exit interviews or surveys of students or alumni may also be used. These types of assessments are useful in understanding how students perceive they have benefited from their educational experience.

CARLO Assessment Timeline
CARLOs will be evaluated on a 3-year rotating cycle between the Core Common Courses and Distribution Lists, with each year's CARLOs due on May 31st. The following timeline shows the schedule of preparation and completion of assessment for 2 cycles. Please be aware of which year or term your CARLO assessment is due. As this schedule is by Commons/Distribution List, many departments will have some CARLO assessment due in subsequent years or even annually, depending on the allocation of their courses in the Core.
